Mini-Plane – Surface Micro-Sampling Shaver

A precision micro-planing tool designed to shave thin layers of material from solid surfaces for high-quality IR and Raman analysis

Product Overview

The S.T. Japan Mini-Plane is a unique sample preparation device that functions like a miniature wood plane for the spectroscopy lab. It is designed to remove ultra-thin, uniform shavings from the surface of polymers, coatings, and organic solids. These shavings are thin enough to be analyzed directly by transmission FTIR, often eliminating the need for complex microtoming or solvent extraction. The device features an adjustable blade height, allowing the user to control the thickness of the shaving with micron-level precision. This is particularly useful for depth profiling of multi-layered plastics or for removing surface oxidation to reach the pristine bulk material beneath. The Mini-Plane is a rugged, manual tool that significantly simplifies the workflow for industrial troubleshooting and quality control

Key Features

  • Thin Sectioning: Produces shavings thin enough for IR transmission (10-20 microns).
  • Adjustable Blade: Precision control over shaving thickness.
  • Non-Destructive (Bulk): Leaves the remainder of the sample intact for other tests.
  • Durable Blades: Hardened steel or carbide blades for long-lasting performance
  • Surface Cleaning: Easily removes surface contamination or weathered layers.
